About Todd

“Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend.” – Bruce Lee

Bio
This is the skim milk version.  Visit the bio page on my art website for more in-depth info…

I grew up in a small midwestern town.  My trumpet was like my right arm.  Earned trumpet scholarship to DePauw University.  Realized I couldn’t play like I envisioned in my head.  Transferred to Kent State and graduated with Journalism degree.  What Up!Moved to New York City after college.  Interned at Epic Records.  Couldn’t live with regret so didn’t pursue a day job in the music industry.  Worked at Columbia University for two years. Quit and donated suits to Goodwill.  Learned guitar.  Pursued career in Hip-Hop/R&B production with brother.  Took a break and began to paint.  Fell in love with art as form of expression…telling universal stories with my oil pastels .  Shifted gears to acoustic folk singing and songwriting.  Here I AM.

Philosophy
I’m bustin’ out of L7 – the square life! The world tries so hard to make us into blocks fitting in a square hole. I’m a circle and I’m sure if you are reading this, you are probably are too!  My life has been the journey of an artist.  Unabashedly, I have patterned myself after folks like Miles Davis, Dennis Rodman, Deion Sanders, Zidane, Claude DeBussy, Muhammed Ali, TupacMalcolm X and all women of the world.  Substance and style…understanding shortcomings and turning them into strengths…being fluid and open to change…producing something that will make the world a better place…hope.

  • Miles started in be-bop, readjusted ’cause he surely couldn’t physically compete with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, and created the cool.
  • Rodman was an L7 from Dallas who reinvented himself into the ultimate winner and celebrity…watch him…he was a spirit on the court.
  • Deion made the position of cornerback in American football important with style backed by substance.
  • Debussy in my mind WAS and IS impressionistic composition and was a real trendsetter in France. Check out his symphony entitled La Mer (The Sea) if you ever have an opportunity.  I played this while in college orchestra and was literally almost overcome while swimming in the colors of his sound.
  • Zidane – up from the bootstraps and gave no quarter.  Operated on instinct…felt the game of soccer.
  • Alinothing else need be said about creativity, strength and principle besides the name.
  • Malcolm X – grew substantially, reevaluated constantly, and arrived at a universal truth before his untimely death.  His autobiography is incredible!
  • Tupac – so represented the dichotomy.
  • Women of the World – unsung heroes…the glue that holds this world together and literally brings hope for the future!
